The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is inviting students to apply for funding for the 2026 academic year. This financial support is available to both new and returning students whether or not they have received NSFAS funding before who are studying or planning to study at a public university or TVET college in South Africa. Please note that NSFAS does not fund studies at private institutions.
This funding is designed to assist students who need financial support to begin or continue their tertiary education. It covers essential costs such as registration and tuition fees, study materials, a food allowance, personal care expenses, and either accommodation or transport, depending on the student’s circumstances.
Prospective applicants can begin their application form September 20 2025. Applicants must submit their applications from this date as the application form will be made available by that date. The online application portal will close on December 15, 2025. Therefore all completed applications along with supporting documents must be submitted before this date as late applications may not be considered for 2026-2027.

For the National Financial Aid Scheme to verify the employment and income details of an applicant’s parents, guardians, or spouse, NSFAS collects certain personal information through relevant agencies. Below are the key documents that may be required when applying:
This form must be completed by the Principal of the School or a Social Worker for non-SASSA applicants.
Required for applicants under 18 who are non-SASSA beneficiaries, to be completed by a Social Worker.
Must be signed by the applicant and/or their parent(s), guardian, or spouse. SASSA recipients do not need to submit this form.
If the applicant has a court-appointed legal guardian, official documentation from the Court is required.
Applicants in this situation should submit the NSFAS Declaration Form instead.
This form must be completed by a certified medical professional (such as a doctor, optometrist, physiotherapist, or head of a disability unit) to confirm the applicant’s disability status and the type of support required.

Follow the steps below to apply online for NSFAS 2026-2027;
Create a myNSFAS account via this link: https://my.nsfas.org.za/ or download the NSFAS App on Google Play or App Store. Your ID number will be your username.
Click on the “Apply’ tab to update your personal information and upload your application supporting documents, as indicated.
