How Many Months Is NSFAS For?
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers financial support to eligible South African students throughout their academic year, lasting 10 months. During this time, NSFAS provides monthly allowances that cover essential expenses such as tuition, accommodation, transport, and living costs. These allowances are disbursed in the first week of each month, helping students manage their finances for the duration of their studies.
The 10-month funding period aligns with the academic calendar, which typically runs from February to November, addressing most of a student’s educational and living needs. NSFAS covers personal care, travel, accommodation, and study-related expenses during this period. However, it is important to note that the specific allowances may vary depending on your institution and program. For university students, the payment schedule may differ from those attending TVET colleges, potentially affecting the timing of payments.
NSFAS provides financial aid for a maximum of five years. If you complete your degree within three to four years, NSFAS will continue supporting you for an additional two years under the N+2 rule, which applies if you need to repeat a course or are enrolled in a program with a duration of two years or less. After this period, students are responsible for their expenses.
