Who Can Appeal?

  • Students whose NSFAS application for financial aid has been rejected.
  • Students whose funding for continuing studies has been withdrawn.
  • Appeals are subject to budget availability.
  • Only students who have applied for NSFAS Financial Aid will be considered for appeals.

Who Cannot Appeal?

Students are not permitted to appeal if they:

  • Are registered for a qualification that NSFAS does not fund;
  • They have reached N+2 (or N+3 in the case of students with disabilities).
  • The student is a gap year student who NSFAS previously denied financial aid to because s/he did not meet the academic eligibility criteria.
  • If the institution has not submitted its registration record to NSFAS or has submitted an incorrect registration record such inquiries should be directed to the institution.

Reasons for Rejection Based on Financial Eligibility

Rejection due to SARS Data:

  • Individuals with an income exceeding R350,000.
  • First-time entering students with an income above R350,000.
  • Disabled students with an income greater than R600,000.

Rejection based on Credit Bureau Data:

  • Declared income exceeding R350,000.
  • Credit bureau information indicating income above R350,000.

Rejection based on Declared Income:

  • Declared income greater than R350,000.
  • Declared income of disabled students surpassing R600,000.
  • Reasons for Appeals from Continuing Students

Reasons for Appealing:

Continuously enrolled students who did not meet academic eligibility criteria may appeal for various reasons, which can include:​

  • A prolonged illness lasting two months or more.
  • Giving birth during the academic semester.
  • Experiencing the death of an immediate family member within the academic year.
  • Being a victim of a violent crime.
