What is NSFAS?

NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is the government student bursary and loan scheme that receives its funding budget from and reports to the Department of Higher Education and Training. The scheme was established in terms of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act 56 of 1999.

Requirements For NSFAS

To qualify for financial aid from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), you must meet certain requirements.

Citizenship

Be a South African citizen or permanent resident

Income

Have a combined household income of no more than R350,000 per year
Have a combined household income of no more than R600,000 per year if you have a disability

Study

Be accepted to study at a public TVET college or university
Have passed Grade 12

Documents

Provide proof of identity, such as a South African ID, passport, or driver’s license
Provide proof of income, such as a payslip, UIF letter, or employment letter
If you have a disability, complete and submit the Disability Annexure A Form and proof of disability
If you are recognized as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development, complete and submit the Vulnerable Child Declaration Form

Who can apply?

All South African Citizens and permanent residents.
For a bursary: combined household income must not exceed R350 000 per annum before deductions.
For a loan: combined household income over R350 000 and below R600 000 per annum before deductions.
Persons with disabilities: combined household income must not exceed R600 000 per annum before deductions.

Who must re-apply?

Returning and University Students who move through the NSFAS academic pathways must re-apply and meet the continuing student academic eligibility requirements.
Students who change institution types example shift from TVET to University or vice versa must reapply for funding.
Students who deregister or drop out during an academic term and wish to resume their studies in future academic terms must reapply during the normal NSFAS application period.

Who cannot apply for a bursary?

Students who have received 100% study funding from non-NSFAS sources.
A student who already has obtained an undergraduate qualification and wants to study a second undergraduate qualification.
A student who has achieved a certificate qualification and wants to study for a second certificate qualification.
Students studying at a private institution.
Students enrolled for qualifications that are not approved by DHET and/or SAQA accredited.

Who can apply for a loan?

Is open to both under and post-graduate programmes.
Funding is split between 70% STEM programmes and 30% Humanities/Social programmes.
A student who has achieved a certificate qualification and wants to study for a second certificate qualification.
The income threshold is above R350 000 and not exceeding R600 000 per annum.
Students are to maintain a 60% pass rate for continued funding.
Academic performance above 70% throughout the programme, entitles a student to a 50% bursary conversion.

What supporting documents will be required when applying?

NSFAS requires personal information from agencies relating to the employment status and level of income of the parents or guardians/spouse of the applicant.
NSFAS Declaration Form is completed by the Principal of the School or the Social Worker. (Non-SASSA only).
The Orphan and Vulnerable Child Declaration Form (for applicants under 18 years) is completed by the Social Worker. (Non-SASSA only).
The NSFAS Consent form is completed by the applicant and/or parent/s, guardian or spouse. SASSA recipients do not require this form. (Non-SASSA only).
If an applicant has indicated that they have a Legal guardian, they must provide proof of guardianship issued by the Court.
Guardianship (not court-appointed) applicant to provide NSFAS declaration form.
Disability Annexure Form: The form must be filled out by a certified, duly registered medical doctor or another suitably qualified professional (such as an optometrist, physiotherapist, or head of the disability unit), who may confirm the student’s status as disabled and specify the kind of support the student needs as well as how the student would benefit from the suggested support.

How To Apply For NSFAS

Once you have confirmed your eligibility and gathered the necessary documents, follow these steps to apply for NSFAS:

Visit the NSFAS website at www.nsfas.org.za and click on the myNSFAS tab.
Create a myNSFAS account if you do not have one, or log in to your existing account.
Click on the “Apply” tab on the myNSFAS page and fill in the required sections with your details.
Upload all the necessary supporting documents.
Carefully review your application to ensure all information is accurate before submitting it.
Click the “SUBMIT” button to ensure your application is sent for evaluation.
It is essential to keep track of your application status by logging in to your myNSFAS account.

To ensure continued funding, students must meet academic progression requirements. The 50% pass rule stipulates that all students receiving NSFAS funding must pass at least half of their registered courses in a given academic year.
