Second Semester NSFAS Applications 2026-2027: What Students Should Know:

Many of the public Universities and Tvet Colleges in South Africa have various semesters in every academic year but the common ones they operate are the first and second semesters. The first semester mostly opens around October to November and the second semester also opens around June to July respectively for every academic year. Nsfas Second Semester Application Open Date For 2026-2027

Nsfas’s second semester usually opens in the middle of the academic year after the first semester but as it stands now, Nsfas has not released the application date for the 2026-2027 second semester:

• Nsfas will be opening its online applications for the 2026-2027  academic year from the 20th of September 2025 and the applications will be closing on the 15th of December 2025. However, the NSFAS late applications for 2026 are closing on the 27th of January 2026.

Who Qualifies Nsfas Second Semester Application 2026-2027

Below is the list of those who qualify to apply for NSFAS:

• All South African citizens
  All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  A person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

What Does The NSFAS Bursary Cover For University Students

If you are enrolled in any of the public universities in South Africa, the Nsfas bursary can cover the following:

• Accommodation (As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
• Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
• Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
• Book allowances R5200 per annum
• Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

What Does The NSFAS Bursary Cover For Tvet College Students

If you are enrolled in any of the public Tvet Colleges in South Africa, the Nsfas bursary can cover the following:

• Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
• Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
• Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
• Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
• Transport R7000 per annum
• Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Nsfas Second Semester Application Requirements For 2026-2027

Applicants applying for Nsfas for the academic year 2026 will have the following requirements:

• NSFAS collects personal information from relevant agencies to verify the employment status and income level of the applicant’s parents, guardians, or spouse.
• The NSFAS Declaration Form must be completed by the school principal or a social worker for non-SASSA applicants.
• The Orphan and Vulnerable Child Declaration Form, required for applicants under 18, must be completed by a social worker for non-SASSA applicants.
• The NSFAS Consent Form must be signed by the applicant and/or their parent(s), guardian, or spouse. SASSA recipients are not required to submit this form (for non-SASSA applicants only).
• Applicants who have indicated a legal guardian must provide a court-issued proof of guardianship.
• If guardianship is not court-appointed, the applicant must submit the NSFAS Declaration Form.
• The Disability Annexure Form must be completed by a certified medical professional, such as a registered doctor, optometrist, physiotherapist, or the head of a disability unit. This form confirms the applicant’s disability status, outlines the required support, and explains how the student would benefit from the assistance provided.

Nsfas Second Semester Application Supporting Documents For 2026-2027

Applicants applying for Nsfas for the second semester must have the following documents uploaded together with their application forms:

General Requirements:

• Certified copy of your ID or smart card (not older than 3 months).
• A signed and completed consent form.

For SASSA Recipients:

• Certified copy of your ID (not older than 3 months).
• A signed and completed consent form.

If Dependent on Parents/Guardian/Spouse:

• Certified ID copies of parent(s), guardian, or spouse (not older than 3 months).
• Proof of income of parent, guardian, or spouse (payslip or appointment letter).

If Financially Independent (No Parental/Guardian Support):

• Proof of income (payslip or appointment letter).
• IRP5 for the past three years.

For Applicants with Disabilities:

• Completed and signed Annexure A form.

For Orphans:

• Completed and signed Declaration Form.

Additional Documents (If Applicable):

• Retrenchment letter or UIF documentation.
• Death certificate(s).
• Divorce decree.
